While many people have made Toby Jugs since the 18th century, Royal Doulton's are coveted by collectors, and many of them can be found at affordable prices on eBay.

A unique Doulton introduction in was the Character Jug, the early examples were designed by Noke himself. The ’s had already seen Doulton’s new take on the traditional toby jug, but it was these new Character Jugs that really caught the public’s imagination.

Henk joined Royal Doulton in working under the direction of Cecil Jack Noke at first working on tableware patterns. Henk was to continue to develop the Character Jug range after Harry Fenton and his first jug was Long John Silver, with which he appeared in a promotional film about pottery in the ’s, that was shot in a studio set up at the Lambeth factory.

The jugs were not the typical full figure reproduction but instead Noke’s toby jugs were only bust length. Royal Doulton produced toby jugs in several sizes.
